Investors are increasingly using multi-asset allocation strategies due to volatile market conditions. Indian equities have seen ups and downs because of global economic uncertainties. Gold and silver have also faced corrections after strong performances. Debt investments have offered steadier, though moderate, returns. Experts say focusing on asset allocation is more important than trying to guess the next top-performing asset class. Harshad Patwardhan, chief investment officer at Union Asset Management Company, said, "Asset allocation is the first key step in the journey of investment for an investor."
Key Details
Research from FundsIndia looked at different combinations of equity, debt, and gold from January 2000 to July 2026. The study found that no single allocation consistently outperformed all periods. However, a portfolio with 70% equity, 15% debt, and 15% gold had the highest average return of 15% over seven-year rolling periods. This mix also kept annualized returns above 10% in 92% of the periods examined. In contrast, a portfolio with 70% equity and 30% debt averaged 13.8%. A conservative 30% equity and 70% debt portfolio averaged 10.7%.
Background
The analysis showed that portfolios with a mix of debt and gold had lower maximum drawdowns compared to pure equity portfolios. For example, the 70:15:15 portfolio had a maximum drawdown of 40%, similar to the 70% equity and 30% debt portfolio. In comparison, a 50:25:25 portfolio recorded a maximum drawdown of 27%. These findings highlight that the amount of assets allocated to gold and debt greatly affects overall performance.

The findings suggest that investors may move towards diversified portfolios to reduce risks linked to market volatility. This trend could boost demand for multi-asset funds and impact equity, debt, and commodity markets.
