Wizz Air Reports €198.2 Million Loss Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Wizz Air reported a net loss of €198.2 million for the quarter ending June 30, a stark contrast to a profit of €38.4 million during the same period last year. The airline attributed this downturn primarily to soaring jet fuel prices driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Fuel expenses surged by 39% year-on-year, totaling €610.5 million, reflecting an 87% increase in market prices, according to the company.

Key Details

Despite these challenges, Wizz Air's total revenue rose by 5.5% to €1.5 billion, bolstered by a 25.1% increase in passenger numbers, which reached 21.2 million. However, revenue per available seat kilometre fell by 8.1% as weaker fares impacted profitability. Chief Executive Jozsef Varadi noted, "The industry has been extremely volatile due to conflict in the Middle East, elevated fuel prices, and changes in booking patterns."

The airline has responded by reallocating its fleet capacity from long-haul operations in the Middle East to more popular European destinations, such as Spain. This strategic shift aims to enhance productivity and improve network integrity. Wizz Air has also recently halted operations in Vienna and exited the Abu Dhabi market last year. Analysts have expressed concerns about the sustainability of growth amid rising costs. Garry White, chief investment commentator at Raymond James, remarked that while passenger growth is strong, higher fuel costs and lower fares are squeezing yields.

Background

Wizz Air's shares fell by 4.9% to 1,089.9p, reflecting investor concerns. The stock has declined 16.3% year-to-date, highlighting the impact of these financial pressures on market sentiment. Aircraft availability is improving, with 27 planes still grounded, down from 41 at the end of last year, and the airline expects full operational capacity by the end of 2027.
