UK Customers to Receive Compensation for Heating Oil Orders

Hundreds of UK customers affected by cancelled heating oil orders will receive compensation, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced. About 800 individuals have been notified, and more will be contacted soon. The CMA reported that suppliers joined its compensation scheme after concerns were raised about possible breaches of customer contracts due to price spikes linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

Key Details

Heating oil prices surged by 92% at their peak, affecting around 1,700 customers. Some individuals faced extra costs between £150 and £350 for replacement heating oil after their original orders were cancelled. The CMA stated that customers whose suppliers are part of the compensation scheme will receive payments covering the difference between their original and replacement orders. Those who did not reorder will have their original contracts honored at the agreed price.

Background

Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA, stressed the importance of heating oil for many households. She said, "Heating oil isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity that many people rely on to have hot water and warm homes." The CMA's actions aim to help customers left without fuel during the price spikes earlier this year. Home heating oil is essential for about 1.5 million households in the UK. In Northern Ireland, 60% of homes rely on it, compared to just over 5% in the rest of the UK.

Market Impact

The compensation scheme may ease financial pressure on affected households, especially in the heating oil sector. This development could stabilize demand for heating oil as customers regain trust in their suppliers.
