Alphabet Raises 2026 CapEx Outlook Amid AI Spending Surge

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from a previous estimate of $180 billion to $190 billion. This increase comes as the company continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure, which has raised concerns about cash flow and shareholder returns. According to Bank of America Securities analyst Justin Post, the heightened spending is part of a strategic shift to prioritize AI capabilities over stock buybacks, which have halted for the first half of 2026 after a 33-quarter streak of repurchases.

Cloud Revenue Growth

Despite the concerns, Post highlighted that Alphabet's cloud revenue surged 82% year over year, significantly exceeding Wall Street's expectations of around 65%. The company's operating margins for its cloud segment expanded to 35.6%. Post noted that this growth suggests that the increased capital expenditures are translating into immediate revenue growth, making the higher spending more justifiable. Additionally, Alphabet reported a record cloud backlog of $514 billion, indicating strong demand for its services.

Strategic Shift from Buybacks

Alphabet's decision to halt stock buybacks is notable, as the company spent $28.31 billion on repurchases in the first half of 2025. The absence of buybacks in 2026 reflects a strategic pivot towards funding infrastructure needs rather than returning cash to shareholders. Management indicated that investments in servers, chips, and data centers will continue to pressure free cash flow, which turned negative at $5.86 billion in Q2 2026. The company must generate sufficient incremental revenue to justify its historic spending levels.
