London Stock Exchange to Launch Round-the-Clock Trading

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) plans to introduce round-the-clock trading in the first half of 2027, according to a report by the Financial Times. The new trading venue will operate from 5 PM to 7:50 AM London time, with a 30-minute pause for end-of-day processes.

Trading Details

This new exchange will initially focus on exchange-traded products, including funds that track both UK and US stock markets. The LSE's main market will continue to operate under its standard hours of 8 AM to 4:30 PM. Julia Hoggett, chief executive of the LSE, highlighted an increasing demand from retail investors worldwide for trading opportunities that align with their schedules, stating,

to use London given our particular timezone, to gain exposure to not only UK assets but global assets.

Competitive Landscape

The move by the LSE follows similar initiatives by other exchanges. Nasdaq plans to extend its trading hours to 23 hours on weekdays starting in December, while the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has already implemented 24/7 trading for cryptocurrency futures and options. Cboe is also set to launch 23×5 trading for U.S. equities on its EDGX Equities Exchange in December.

Market Impact

The introduction of round-the-clock trading could enhance liquidity and attract more retail investors to the LSE, particularly in exchange-traded products. This shift may influence trading volumes and market dynamics in the UK and European markets. Investors will watch for further details on the launch and its impact on trading strategies as the date approaches.
