India Advances ₹1.09 Trillion Tax Transfer to States

NEW DELHI: The Indian government on Thursday advanced ₹1.09 trillion to states as their share of central taxes. This move aims to support spending during the festival season and boost capital expenditure. The transfer was made five days earlier than usual and follows a similar release on October 31, according to the finance ministry.

Key Details

The extra funds are meant to improve state finances. This will help governments speed up development and welfare-related spending. The timing aligns with a busy festival calendar, including Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali, which are expected to raise local spending. The ministry noted that tax devolution is a key revenue source for states, allowing them to fund various priorities.

Uttar Pradesh received the largest share of the latest transfer at ₹19,208 crore. Bihar followed with ₹10,845 crore, and Madhya Pradesh received ₹8,010 crore. Other notable allocations included West Bengal at ₹7,866 crore and Maharashtra at ₹7,022 crore. The distribution of funds reflects the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission, which allocates 41% of the divisible pool of central taxes to states over a five-year period.
