Block Announces Second Round of Job Cuts in 2026

Block, the fintech company led by Jack Dorsey, announced on Wednesday that it will cut jobs for the second time this year. The layoffs mainly affect employees in the Cash App division and other operational teams. The exact number of affected employees was not shared, but the company informed staff through an internal email that roles in Customer Ops, Risk Ops, and Learning & Content Operations would be eliminated or changed.

Key Details

The severance package for laid-off US employees includes at least 60 days of pay. It also offers a minimum of seven weeks of base salary, plus an extra week for each year of service. Affected workers who sign a severance agreement will receive a total of 90 days of pay, which includes 30 days of pay without working. Additionally, they will get three months of COBRA premium coverage for healthcare and a one-time payment of $5,000 for transition help. This package is different from the one offered in February, when the company laid off more than 40% of its workforce and provided 20 weeks of salary plus benefits.

Background

Block has said that these layoffs are part of a larger effort to streamline operations and improve efficiency. The company reported strong third-quarter results, with gross profit rising 22% year over year to $3.24 billion. Following these results, Block raised its full-year gross profit forecast to $12.6 billion for 2026. Dorsey has stressed the need to adapt to changes in the business landscape, including the impact of AI on operations.
