Azorom Leads Solar and Battery Project in West Bank

Irish Firm Launches Solar Initiative in West Bank

Irish energy consulting firm Azorom is leading a new solar and battery storage project in the West Bank. This initiative aims to boost energy independence for the Palestinian territories. The project follows a six-month feasibility study done for the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority (Penra), which was funded by the World Bank. The study looked at current solar generation, electricity demand, and the distribution network in the area.

The West Bank depends on Israel for 87% of its power supply. This supply has faced interruptions due to political tensions and unpaid debts. Azorom's study aims to find safe and cost-effective locations for new solar and battery systems. The Palestinian Authority is working to lessen its reliance on Israeli energy through various solar projects. Penra plans to add 1,430 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic capacity by 2030. This goal is nearly five times the current installed capacity in the West Bank and Gaza combined.

Azorom was chosen for this project after an international tender process. The firm assessed the feasibility of adding power to two pilot electricity networks: Tulkarem Municipality and the Tubas District Electricity Company (TDECO). These networks serve about 54,000 customers. The study included an analysis of network performance and storage needs. It also produced investment-ready procurement documents.

Market Impact

This project could lead to more investment in renewable energy in the region, especially in solar power and battery storage technologies. This change may improve energy security for the Palestinian territories and affect local utilities and energy markets. Investors will be looking for updates on the project's timeline and developments in Palestinian energy policy.
