Billionaire investor Ken Griffin has stepped in to acquire a significant portion of the troubled hedge fund Situational Awareness, which has seen its portfolio plummet amid declining artificial intelligence stock prices. The deal, executed swiftly by Citadel, comes after Situational Awareness lost 67% of its value in July, forcing the fund to unwind most of its $16 billion public equities book, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Rapid Response to Crisis

Griffin's intervention began on Wednesday morning when Citadel executives reached out to Situational Awareness founder Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher. Griffin, alongside top Citadel executives, conducted an overnight analysis of the fund's trading positions and liquidity. This rapid response is part of Griffin's ongoing strategy to capitalize on market dislocations, which has earned him a reputation as a 'rescue buyer' in the hedge fund industry. Aschenbrenner acknowledged the situation in a letter to investors, stating, "We let you down."

Background of Situational Awareness

Situational Awareness was once a standout in the hedge fund sector, boasting $45 billion in assets at its peak in July 2024 and achieving gains exceeding 1,000% since its inception. However, as technology stocks began to decline, the fund faced mounting pressure from lenders such as Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America, prompting Aschenbrenner to liquidate positions to meet margin calls.
