PNB Q1 Profit Surges 214%, Shares Hit Two-Month High

Shares of Punjab National Bank (PNB) rose 5.6% to ₹111.70 during trading on July 20, reaching a two-month high after the bank reported a significant increase in its first-quarter profit for FY27. The state-owned lender's net profit more than tripled to ₹5,253 crore, a 214% increase from ₹1,675 crore in the same quarter last year, driven by improved core operations and enhanced asset quality, according to the bank's earnings report.

Financial Performance

PNB's net interest income (NII) grew by 4% quarter-on-quarter, while the net interest margin (NIM) expanded by 6 basis points, aided by lower funding costs and a reduction in low-yielding advances. Additionally, PNB aims to mobilize USD 2.5 billion in Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits to bolster funding costs.

The bank's operating profit also saw a year-on-year increase of 6%, reaching ₹7,519 crore compared to ₹7,081 crore in the previous year. Asset quality improved, with Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) decreasing by ₹7,292 crore to ₹35,381 crore from ₹42,673 crore. The Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) also fell by ₹699 crore to ₹3,433 crore, resulting in a net NPA ratio decline to 0.26% from 0.38% year-over-year. However, provisions for bad loans rose to ₹792 crore, up from ₹396 crore in the same quarter last year.
