The Hong Kong Investment Corporation (HKIC) reported a significant increase in investment income for the year 2025, generating approximately HK$6.46 billion (US$824 million), a 175% rise from the previous year. This performance reflects the firm’s strategy as a 'patient capital' engine aimed at supporting local economic development, according to its latest financial report released on Thursday.
Investment Strategy
The HKIC achieved a net internal rate of return of 14%, indicating strong performance despite the typical downturn experienced by new venture capital funds. Officials noted that the firm has expanded its portfolio to over 200 projects, with ten companies already listed in Hong Kong and more than 30 others awaiting approval for their listing applications. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, who chairs the HKIC, emphasized that the investment vehicle is entering a new phase by enhancing a 'capital – technology – talent' cycle to bolster Hong Kong’s economic growth.
Future Outlook
Chan stated,
We are translating strategic priorities into a thriving ecosystem that reinforces Hong Kong’s role as a ‘superconnector’ and ‘super value-adder’ on the global stage.
The robust returns are seen as a positive signal for the city’s economic vision as it seeks to attract more investments and enhance its market position.
The significant rise in HKIC's investment income could positively influence investor sentiment towards Hong Kong’s financial markets and related sectors, particularly venture capital and technology. Investors will watch for further developments in the HKIC’s portfolio and upcoming listing approvals to gauge the sustainability of this growth.
