Graduate Fashion Week Celebrates 35 Years with Liberty Collaboration

Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) marks its 35th anniversary this year, showcasing the best of emerging fashion talent from across the UK and beyond. The event, held at the Truman Brewery in London, has become the world’s largest platform for BA fashion graduates, featuring catwalk shows, exhibitions, and networking opportunities for aspiring designers and industry leaders alike. Founded in 1991 by notable figures including designer Jeff Banks, GFW was created to connect British fashion universities with industry professionals, providing a vital launchpad for new talent.

This year, GFW highlights a collaboration with Liberty, a renowned British department store known for its unique and eclectic offerings. The partnership aims to elevate the visibility of graduate collections while reinforcing the importance of sustainable design practices in the fashion industry. The event not only showcases individual collections but also emphasizes the broader themes of innovation and sustainability that are increasingly critical in today’s fashion landscape.

Over its 35-year history, GFW has successfully launched the careers of several prominent British designers, including Christopher Bailey of Burberry and Stella McCartney. Maurice Mullen, former Head of Fashion and Luxury Goods at the Evening Standard and now a trustee at GFW, underscores the importance of maintaining a pipeline of talent in the fashion industry. He notes that the event has evolved significantly, adapting to include a wider range of fashion disciplines beyond traditional design.

Douglas MacLennan, Chairman of Graduate Fashion Week, reflects on the event's growth, stating that the shift towards hybrid fashion programs demonstrates the changing landscape of fashion education. As GFW continues to evolve, it remains a crucial conduit for graduates to enter the industry and make their mark on the future of fashion.
