Heating Oil Prices Rise to £550 for UK Rural Households

Heating oil prices in the UK have jumped to 111 pence per litre (ppl), affecting around 1.5 million households that rely on this fuel. This increase follows a stable period earlier this year when prices were about 60ppl, according to Boiler Juice. The rise is linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine, which have disrupted supply chains.

Key Details

Peter Mason, a resident of Minety in north Wiltshire, said filling his oil tank will now cost over £550. This is a big increase from about £300 last year. He expressed concern about the financial pressure, stating, "It means I'll have to eek out what I spent my money on. I'm retired, it's not like I can change jobs. I have to be really careful and pull money out of savings."

Dylan Williams, who runs a van-driving business in Monmouth, Wales, faces similar issues. He has raised his service prices due to higher fuel costs. His fuel expenses have gone up from £120-130 to £160 for a full tank. Williams noted the constant worry about changing diesel prices, saying, "It's ever increasing, ever worrying."

Background

The heating oil market is unregulated, so changes in global prices quickly affect consumers. The current price of 111ppl is much lower than the high of 134ppl reached earlier this year amid geopolitical tensions.

Market Impact

Rising heating oil prices are likely to increase living costs for rural households. This could affect discretionary spending and lead to higher service prices in local economies. Investors will keep an eye on global oil supply and geopolitical tensions that could influence pricing.
