The Indian stock market faced modest losses on Tuesday, July 21, as geopolitical tensions in West Asia weighed on investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 index closed down 0.21% at 24,186, while the S&P BSE Sensex fell 0.30% to 77,480, according to market data.
Market Performance
Despite the overall decline, the broader markets showed resilience, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices gaining up to 0.53%. Sector performance was mixed; the Nifty Chemicals, Nifty Cement, and Nifty Realty indices rose more than 1%. In contrast, the Nifty PSU Bank index was the biggest laggard, dropping 0.88%, while the Nifty IT index fell 0.61%. Other sectors such as Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty Consumer Durables also faced losses.
The backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East contributed to the cautious trading environment. The U.S. conducted its 10th consecutive day of strikes in response to attacks attributed to Iran, which has retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting Kuwait. Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, noted that despite these geopolitical challenges, midcap stocks are performing well in anticipation of strong corporate earnings, supported by demand-led business updates.
Earnings Outlook
The mixed performance of the June quarter earnings has also limited investor appetite for equities. Nair added that while midcap valuations are elevated compared to large caps, underlying business conditions are expected to remain healthy through the first half of FY27. However, sustaining this momentum will depend on the normalization of input costs, as demand growth may flatten in the second half of FY27.
The geopolitical tensions are likely to influence investor sentiment and could lead to increased volatility in the Indian equity markets, particularly affecting sectors sensitive to global events, such as oil and gas. Investors will watch for further developments in the Middle East and their potential impact on market stability.
