Hungary probes BYD investment after ex-minister’s appointment

Hungary's government announced an investigation into a significant investment by Chinese automaker BYD, following the appointment of former foreign minister Péter Szijjártó to an executive role at the company. The investigation was initiated after Szijjártó's resignation from Parliament last week to join BYD, which has been accused of receiving substantial government subsidies during his tenure.

Key Details

Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated on Monday that Szijjártó had facilitated the investment while in office, claiming he provided

hundreds of billions (of forints) in public money, diplomatic support and state infrastructure

to BYD. Magyar emphasized that the inquiry will scrutinize all decisions, negotiations, and state commitments made by Szijjártó related to BYD's investment in Hungary. This includes examining subsidies, tax breaks, permits, environmental exemptions, and publicly funded investments granted to large multinational firms during the administration of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Background

The investigation aims to uncover who made these decisions, what warnings were ignored, and the financial burden left on Hungarian taxpayers, local communities, and the environment. Neither Szijjártó nor BYD has publicly responded to the allegations of conflict of interest stemming from Szijjártó's previous role.

Market Impact

The investigation could influence investor sentiment towards Hungary's regulatory environment and foreign investment policies, particularly in the automotive sector. BYD's operations may face scrutiny, potentially affecting its expansion plans in Europe. Watch for further developments as the investigation unfolds and the government releases its findings.
