Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has reached a milestone of 100,000 electric vehicles (EVs) produced in Brazil, according to the company. The milestone vehicle, a BYD Seagull, was completed at the Camacari plant in Bahia, which employs over 5,500 workers. Stella Li, BYD's head for the Americas, stated that the company has received orders for an additional 50,000 cars from Argentina and 50,000 from Mexico, which will also be exported from the Camacari facility.
Production Capacity and Investment
The Camacari complex, which took 15 months to construct, represents a significant investment of approximately 5.5 billion reals (about US$1 billion). The facility spans 4.68 million square meters and aims for an initial production capacity of 150,000 vehicles annually, with a longer-term goal of increasing that capacity to 600,000 units.
European Response
As BYD expands its footprint in South America, there are growing calls in Europe for increased tariffs on Chinese products to protect local industries from the influx of cheaper imports. This response comes amid concerns over the competitive impact of Chinese EVs on European manufacturers. According to industry analysts, the European market is closely monitoring the situation as it weighs potential policy changes in response to the surge in Chinese EVs.
The expansion of BYD in Brazil may influence the European EV market, particularly if tariffs are implemented, which could raise costs for consumers and affect demand for Chinese imports.
