Gas Prices Near $4 as Americans Spend $308 Million More

Gas prices in the United States are approaching $4 per gallon, with Americans spending an additional $308 million on gasoline compared to last year, according to GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan. As of Thursday, the national average price for gasoline was reported at $3.9430 per gallon, just shy of the $4 mark. Diesel prices have also surged, averaging $5.0050 per gallon, which is over $1 higher than the same time last year.

Rising Oil Prices

The spike in gas prices coincides with rising oil prices, which were slightly below $80 per barrel at the time of De Haan's report. This increase in fuel costs is attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East, including recent military actions by the U.S. Central Command against Iranian military infrastructure. De Haan noted that the average price of gasoline is down from $4.0440 per gallon a month ago but still reflects significant year-over-year increases.

Market Reactions

Despite concerns about diesel shortages in California, De Haan dismissed these claims, stating that fuel supplies remain stable. He emphasized that operations at major transport hubs like Los Angeles International Airport are unaffected. President Donald Trump has also mentioned ongoing discussions with the Venezuelan government to increase oil production as a potential response to the current situation.

Market Impact

The rise in gas and diesel prices is likely to affect consumer spending and could lead to increased inflationary pressures. Sectors such as transportation and consumer goods may see higher costs passed on to consumers. Investors will watch for further developments in Middle Eastern tensions and any announcements regarding U.S. oil production strategies.
