PJM Interconnection reported on Tuesday that its recent auction to secure power for the year starting June 2028 fell short by 6.8 gigawatts (GW). This marks the third consecutive year that the largest U.S. power grid has failed to meet its reliability requirements amid increasing demand from data centers. The shortfall is equivalent to the output of nearly seven traditional nuclear reactors.

The auction, known as the Base Residual Auction (BRA), secured 138,318 megawatts (MW) of unforced capacity generation (UCAP) and demand response. However, this total, combined with an additional 10,864 MW acquired under the Fixed Resource Requirement (FRR), still did not meet PJM's reliability standard, leaving a total of 149,182 MW available. PJM serves over 67 million customers across 13 states and Washington, D.C., and the shortfall indicates that the committed supply is insufficient to meet the one-in-ten-year reliability standard, according to the company.
