New Delhi: The Indian government launched the eighth round of auctions for critical mineral blocks on Wednesday, offering 20 blocks for bidding. This tranche includes 13 newly identified blocks and seven that were unsold in previous rounds, according to Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy.
Mineral Portfolio
The auction features a diverse portfolio of minerals, including molybdenum, graphite, rare earth elements (REE), lithium, and vanadium. These minerals are vital for clean energy, advanced manufacturing, fertilizers, and defense sectors, the minister noted. In total, the mining ministry has auctioned 56 out of 88 critical and strategic mineral blocks in the previous seven rounds.
Future Initiatives
Reddy also announced the India Mining Week 2026, scheduled for November 15 to 17 in New Delhi. This event is expected to attract over 25,000 industry professionals and will focus on themes such as mineral security, sustainability, and innovation in mining. India is actively working to enhance its critical mineral ecosystem, which includes both domestic mining and international collaborations. In May, India and the U.S. signed a framework to mine and refine critical minerals, further supported by the Quad alliance involving Japan and Australia.
The auction of critical mineral blocks could influence sectors reliant on these resources, particularly clean energy and advanced manufacturing. Companies involved in mining and mineral processing may see increased activity as India aims to strengthen its supply chains for critical minerals. Watch for developments during the India Mining Week 2026, which may provide insights into future mining policies and partnerships.
