A wildfire on the Costa Brava in Girona has burned approximately 1,280 hectares, forcing 12,000 residents to remain indoors. The fire, which broke out in La Bisbal d’Empordà, is fueled by strong tramontana winds and remains out of control, according to local authorities.
Arrest Made
A man has been arrested on suspicion of starting the wildfire while using an angle grinder by the roadside. The Government of Catalonia has requested assistance from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) to combat the flames, which have also affected farmland in the region.
Emergency Measures
In response to the fire, authorities have issued mobile alerts to around 40,000 people. Residents in several municipalities, including those near the Gavarres massif, have been advised to stay indoors to ensure their safety. The president of the regional government, Salvador Illa, has urged the public to adhere strictly to safety instructions. Firefighters have deployed more than fifty units, including eleven aircraft, to tackle the blaze.
The fire has generated a significant column of smoke, prompting preventive confinement measures in affected areas. At a holiday camp impacted by the confinement, 150 children are reported to be safe.
