Met Police Under Scrutiny for Handling Al Fayed Allegations

Survivors of abuse by the late Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed have filed complaints with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) regarding the Metropolitan Police's handling of allegations against him. More than 400 claims of sexual misconduct, including rape and human trafficking, have been reported against Al Fayed, covering incidents from 1977 to 2014. The IOPC confirmed that three victims lodged complaints this week about the police's actions from 2018 to 2024, which will be assessed before any further action is taken.

Key Details

The IOPC is already investigating one current and four former Metropolitan Police officers for potential misconduct linked to the case. This investigation is part of Operation Cornpoppy, which was launched 19 months ago and is examining claims made by at least 155 victims. Reports indicate that at least 21 of these claims were made before Al Fayed's death in 2023. The Met has stated it is cooperating with the IOPC and continues to investigate individuals who may have facilitated Al Fayed's alleged offenses.

Background

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said,

We are assisting the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as it carries out an independent investigation into our handling of reports of sexual offending by Mohamed Al Fayed.

They noted that the serving of notices does not guarantee misconduct proceedings will follow, and that the investigation into potential facilitators of Al Fayed's crimes remains active.
