Sitharaman urges tax officials to ease ITR filing process

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called on the Income Tax Department to adopt a more taxpayer-friendly approach during the 167th Income Tax Day celebrations in New Delhi on July 24. She emphasized the need to allow honest taxpayers to correct genuine mistakes while taking strict action against deliberate tax evasion.

Key Details

Sitharaman's remarks come as the July 31 income tax return (ITR) filing deadline approaches. As of July 21, over 3.2 crore ITRs had been filed, with more than 94% verified and around 60% processed. The upgraded e-filing portal has managed record traffic, processing over one crore taxpayer interactions in a single day, with peak daily interactions reaching 1.6 crore.

The Finance Minister outlined the importance of viewing taxpayers as partners in India's economic growth rather than merely as assessees. She stated,

Our approach should ensure convenience for the honest taxpayer, an opportunity to correct bona fide errors and firm consequences for deliberate evasion.

Sitharaman cautioned tax officers against treating honest taxpayers and wilful evaders alike, stressing that excessive enforcement can lead to a negative experience for taxpayers.

Background

To guide the Income Tax Department, she introduced the 5Rs of Responsive Tax Governance: Recognise, Respond, Redress, Reflect, and Reform. Sitharaman highlighted that tax certainty is crucial for encouraging voluntary compliance, improving ease of doing business, and enhancing India's attractiveness as an investment destination.
