EU urged to hybridise energy grid to reduce clean energy

Experts are calling on the European Union to adopt hybridisation strategies to address the inefficiencies of the continent's energy grid, which is struggling to accommodate a surge in renewable energy projects. According to a report by the energy think tank Ember, over 120 gigawatts (GW) of anticipated renewable capacity is at risk due to bottlenecks and insufficient grid capacity. This amount of energy could power approximately 876,000 households for a year, based on an average consumption of 10,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

The existing energy infrastructure was primarily designed for centralized coal plants, making it ill-equipped to handle the variable nature of wind and solar power. As a result, significant amounts of clean energy are wasted annually. Ember's analysis suggests that Europe could potentially add 25 GW of wind and solar power across seven EU countries without the need for additional grid capacity through hybridisation.

Hybridisation involves combining technologies such as wind, solar, and storage behind a single grid connection. This method can expedite the integration of renewable energy sources. Hydropower plants, which often have underutilized capacity during the day, are particularly well-suited for this approach. By connecting wind or solar installations to existing hydropower facilities, developers can more quickly bring new renewable projects online.
