US Stocks Gain as Earnings Season Exceeds Expectations

The US stock market has shown significant gains this year, with the S&P 500 rising nearly 9% and the Nasdaq Composite gaining about 10% year-to-date. As of last week, the S&P 500 closed at 7,457.69, while the Nasdaq Composite finished at 25,520.24, according to data from Appreciate CEO Subho Moulik.

Key Details

Moulik noted that the market is at a pivotal point, driven by moderating inflation, resilient economic growth, and strong corporate earnings. June inflation figures came in below expectations for the second consecutive month, and major banks like JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo reported earnings ahead of forecasts.

The bigger takeaway came from earnings rather than macro data,

Moulik stated.

Highlighting recent performance, Moulik pointed out that Taiwan Semiconductor reported record quarterly revenue of NT$1.27 trillion ($40.2 billion), a 33.7% increase year-on-year. The company also achieved a net profit of approximately NT$706.6 billion. This growth is attributed to high demand for advanced chips, particularly from Nvidia and AMD. He emphasized that investors are increasingly rewarding companies that convert AI investments into sustainable cash flows, rather than just potential.

Background

Moulik suggested that investors consider buying five specific stocks over the next one to two weeks, which he believes are well-positioned within the evolving AI investment cycle. He remarked,

The first phase rewarded companies building computing infrastructure. The next phase is rewarding businesses that can monetize that infrastructure through software, financial products, and consumer platforms.
Market Impact

The positive earnings reports, particularly from technology firms like Taiwan Semiconductor and Netflix, could bolster investor confidence in the tech sector, potentially leading to further gains in related stocks. Investors will watch for upcoming earnings reports from other major companies to gauge the sustainability of this growth trend.
