Kraken launches USD-settled bitcoin, ether options for

Kraken has launched USD-settled options for bitcoin and ether on its Kraken Pro platform, aiming to expand the market for crypto derivatives. The new products were introduced on Thursday and are available initially through a request-for-quote (RFQ) system, with plans for a broader rollout in Europe later.

Market Strategy

According to Kraken, the design of existing options products has limited adoption, particularly among retail traders. Alexia Theodorou, Kraken's director of derivatives, stated that crypto options represent a much smaller segment of the market compared to traditional finance, where options account for a significant share of derivatives trading.

Crypto options activity is still a fraction of what it is in traditional markets, but the gap is closing as professional and institutional capital continues to move into digital assets,

Theodorou said.

Competitive Landscape

The launch comes amid increasing competition in the crypto derivatives market, with various exchanges and traditional financial firms seeking to enhance their offerings as institutional interest grows. Currently, the majority of crypto trading volumes are derived from derivatives, but options are still a relatively small part of this sector, largely dominated by established platforms like Deribit, CME Group, and Binance. Kraken's initiative reflects a broader trend of new entrants targeting the underdeveloped options market.

Market Impact

The introduction of these options could enhance trading volumes in bitcoin and ether, particularly among retail investors who have previously been underserved. Increased participation in the options market may lead to heightened volatility and trading activity in these cryptocurrencies.

Investors will watch for Kraken's further expansion of its options offerings and the response from competitors in the derivatives space.
