M&T Bank reports record earnings on rising loan volume

M&T Bank reported record earnings for the second quarter, driven by a significant increase in loan volume. The Buffalo, New York-based regional bank's earnings reached an all-time high, reflecting strong growth in its commercial and industrial lending segments. Chief Financial Officer Daryl Bible stated,

Loan Growth Details

The bank increased its full-year lending target by $1 billion, now projecting total loans to reach between $141 billion and $143 billion by year-end. Average commercial and industrial loans rose to $66 billion, marking an 8% increase from the previous quarter. Additionally, M&T Bank's commercial real estate loans saw a slight increase to $25.6 billion, the first linked-quarter growth since 2021. The consumer loan portfolio also expanded by 5% to $26.7 billion during the same period.

Despite a slight decline in average deposits to $163.5 billion compared to the previous quarter, M&T Bank noted that deposit growth had improved in the latter part of the quarter.
