The FBI reported on Saturday that it has seized more than 600 drones flying over restricted airspace during the ongoing World Cup in the United States. The agency indicated that these seizures occurred across all 11 host cities since the tournament began on June 10.
Drone Seizures by City
Among the cities, Miami saw 99 drones confiscated, followed by Atlanta with 77, and Kansas City with 32. The FBI, in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), implemented a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) policy to enforce temporary flight restrictions around stadiums and related viewing sites. Violations of these restrictions can lead to civil fines up to $75,000 and criminal fines up to $100,000, along with potential imprisonment and seizure of the drones.
Enforcement Measures
The FBI has deployed specialized drone mitigation teams to monitor and intercept unauthorized drones near major events. The agency has not disclosed specific methods for intercepting drones but emphasized the importance of maintaining safety in the airspace. Kansas City U.S. Attorney R. Matthew Price remarked,
Not only is flying drones in TFR zones illegal, it’s dangerous,
urging the public to report any violations. Reports indicate that some drone operators may have ignored the FBI's warnings regarding these restrictions.
