EBRD Provides €255M Loan for Kazakhstan Gold Processing

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced on Wednesday that it is providing a €255 million loan to support Kazakhstan's first large-scale refractory gold ore processing facility. This investment aims to enhance the country's mineral processing capabilities and unlock previously inaccessible gold reserves.

Key Details

The funding will be used for the construction of the Ertis pressure oxidation hydrometallurgical complex in the Pavlodar region, developed by Solidcore Resources. The facility is designed to process up to 278,500 tonnes of gold concentrate annually. According to the EBRD, approximately half of Kazakhstan's gold resources are contained in refractory ores, which traditional processing methods cannot handle.

EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso stated,

This investment is important in terms of the added value and Kazakhstan moving up the value chain.

The project is expected to create a new metallurgical segment in Kazakhstan, which currently relies on mining for about 12% of its GDP and one-third of its commodity exports. Renaud-Basso emphasized that continued reforms are necessary to attract further investment in Kazakhstan's mineral processing sector, highlighting the need for regulatory stability and data transparency.

Background

The introduction of pressure oxidation technology will allow Kazakhstan to process complex ores domestically for the first time, thereby strengthening its competitiveness in the global market. This development aligns with the country's strategy to increase value-added production in its mining sector.

Market Impact

The EBRD's financing is likely to enhance Kazakhstan's gold production capacity, which could influence gold prices and mining sector investments. Investors will watch for further developments in Kazakhstan's regulatory environment that may affect foreign investment in the mining sector.
