China's Tianwen-2 spacecraft arrived at the asteroid Kamoʻoalewa, also known as 2016 HO3, on July 4, marking a significant milestone in its mission. The spacecraft reached the asteroid after more than 13 months of travel, as part of a mission aimed at studying this unique object and collecting samples for return to Earth.
Mission Details
Kamoʻoalewa is classified as a quasi-satellite, orbiting the sun while remaining in sync with Earth's orbit. Discovered in 2016, the asteroid measures between 130 and 330 feet (40 to 100 meters) in diameter. Depending on its size, Kamoʻoalewa could be the smallest asteroid ever visited by a spacecraft. The Tianwen-2 mission, which launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on May 28, 2025, will spend approximately nine months orbiting the asteroid.
Sample Collection Plans
During its time at Kamoʻoalewa, Tianwen-2 will map the asteroid's surface to identify a safe location for sample collection. The spacecraft is equipped with a touch-and-go sampling system and drills to gather surface material. Scientists aim to return at least 100 grams of samples to Earth, with the spacecraft expected to depart the asteroid in April 2027 and return a capsule that could land on Earth in November 2027. The asteroid is believed to be a remnant from the moon, possibly created by a significant impact event long ago.
