Portugal has activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism in response to severe wildfires that have erupted across the country. The decision was made on Friday as firefighters struggle to contain multiple blazes, particularly in the municipality of Vouzela, where around 1,100 personnel are currently deployed. The fires have been exacerbated by a heatwave, prompting a red alert across the region.
Firefighting Efforts
As of Friday evening, six wildfires were reported to be burning in Portugal, with significant resources committed to battling the flames. Over 1,500 emergency personnel, supported by approximately 500 vehicles and 25 aircraft, are engaged in firefighting efforts. The National Civil Protection Authority confirmed that the fire in Vouzela is threatening homes and has already disrupted local transport, including the closure of the Vouga railway line. At least seven individuals have sustained injuries, according to the ANPC.
International Assistance
In a statement, the Portuguese government announced the request for four Canadair water-bombing planes and a team from the Military Emergencies Unit of the Spanish Armed Forces. Spain has already responded by providing one Canadair aircraft under existing bilateral agreements. The situation remains critical, with the fires spreading to additional municipalities, including Oliveira de Frades, Águeda, and Tondela, where precautionary evacuations have taken place.
