Indian equity markets saw a strong rally as the Nifty 50 closed above the 25,000 mark. It rose 8.6% during the week ending November 6, 2026. This was the index's largest weekly gain in nearly six years. The rally was driven by strong foreign institutional investor (FII) inflows, lower crude oil prices, and solid corporate earnings. The BSE Sensex also surged, gaining 8.8% to close at 81,028.02, its highest level in over eight months.
Key Details
The rally was fueled by aggressive buying from FIIs. They purchased shares worth ₹35,781 crore over five trading sessions, according to exchange data. On November 6, the Nifty 50 advanced by 493.75 points, or 2.01%. The Sensex increased by 1,718.01 points, or 2.17%. Despite this recovery, both indices remain down for the year. The Nifty 50 is down 4.2%, and the Sensex is down 4.9%. This is compared to a 7% gain in the MSCI Emerging Markets index.
Market analysts noted that the recent gains came despite a global sell-off in technology stocks and concerns over geopolitical tensions. "Indian equities defied a global rout, extending their winning run as investors treated the home market as a relative safe harbour amid turmoil abroad," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. The market capitalisation for BSE-listed companies rose from ₹475.34 lakh crore to around ₹503 lakh crore. This added nearly ₹28 lakh crore to investors' wealth.
The surge in the Nifty 50 and Sensex could boost investor confidence in Indian equities. This is especially true for retail investors looking to take advantage of the festive season. This trend may support further inflows into the market, particularly in sectors linked to consumer spending.
Background
