Indian Markets Drop Over 1% as Investors Lose ₹4 Lakh Crore

The Indian stock market saw a big drop on Monday, October 19. The benchmark indices, the Sensex and the Nifty 50, each fell by more than 1%. The Sensex dropped over 1,000 points, or 1.4%, hitting an intraday low of 73,709. The Nifty 50 decreased by over 300 points, or 1.3%, to a low of 22,845. This sell-off caused a loss of ₹4 lakh crore in market value, bringing the total to ₹469 lakh crore from ₹472.6 lakh crore in the previous session, according to data from the BSE.

Key Factors Behind the Decline

Experts pointed to several reasons for the market drop. High Brent crude prices, around $108 per barrel, raised worries about inflation and tighter monetary policy from central banks, including the US Federal Reserve and the Reserve Bank of India. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, said, "The escalation of tensions in Hormuz and the consequent surge in Brent crude is a strong headwind to the market."

Disappointing quarterly results from major private banks like Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and YES Bank also hurt sentiment. Their stocks fell by up to 5%. The Nifty Private Bank index dropped by 2%, while the Nifty Bank index fell by 1%. Analysts noted that mixed results from these banks were below expectations, which affected market confidence.

Global Market Influence

The GIFT Nifty showed a cautious start for Indian markets, reflecting weakness in Asian markets and mixed signals from US stock futures. Even with a slight drop in crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainties still weigh on investor sentiment. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, mentioned that ongoing strength in energy prices could negatively affect the rupee.

Market Impact

The decline in the Indian stock market is likely to impact investor sentiment, especially in sectors sensitive to oil prices, such as energy and banking. High crude prices could lead to more inflation, affecting corporate profits and economic growth.
