Tesla Launches Cybercab in Austin Amid Low-Key Event

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) launched its two-seat Cybercab in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. This vehicle is now part of its robotaxi fleet. The event was invite-only and did not create the expected public excitement. Tesla's Vice President of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, announced the addition during a closed presentation. He stated, "Cybercab now officially joins the robotaxi fleet. You can go outside and take rides. It’s open to the entire public."

Key Details

The Cybercab is built for autonomous operation. It does not have a steering wheel or pedals. Instead, it uses Tesla's AI4 computer and Full Self-Driving software to navigate without human help. As of the launch, 45 Cybercabs were registered for driverless operation in Texas, according to the state's Department of Motor Vehicles. The company has said that the Cybercab will be priced under $30,000 to make it affordable for consumers.

Background

Although the launch event was quiet, videos on social media showed the Cybercab in action. Users can hail rides through the Robotaxi app. Tesla updated the app to include Cybercab rides. The new terms of service prohibit minors under 13 from using the service. This age limit is stricter than the one for the existing Model Y robotaxis.

Market Impact

The launch of the Cybercab could impact Tesla's stock and the wider electric vehicle market. The company aims to expand its autonomous ride-hailing services. Investors will be looking for updates on regulatory developments regarding the vehicle's approval for mass-market sales. This is especially important because of its unique design without traditional controls.
