Vodafone Idea Targets Free Cash Flow Amid 5G Expansion Plans

Vodafone Idea aims to achieve free cash flow as it starts a major 5G expansion. Kumar Mangalam Birla, the company's non-executive chairman, highlighted the need for free cash flow during the annual general meeting on August 27, 2026. He said this goal is crucial for the company's three-year plan focused on subscriber growth, increased revenue, and better cash earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (Ebitda).

Key Details

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, Vodafone Idea reported a smaller net loss of ₹3,754 crore, down from ₹6,608 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations rose 6% year-on-year to ₹11,689 crore. Ebitda increased by 9.1% to ₹5,034 crore. Birla expressed optimism about the company's progress. He stated, "Our business has started to look better on several operating parameters, as we have seen from Q1 results, and we are very hopeful and optimistic that this momentum will continue."

Despite these positive results, analysts warn that achieving sustainable free cash flow may be tough. Analysts at IIFL Securities noted that the company's free cash flow turned negative in fiscal years 2025 and 2026 due to higher capital spending and upcoming spectrum payments. They estimate a negative free cash flow of ₹12,340 crore in FY25 and ₹6,400 crore in FY26. To meet its goals, Vodafone Idea may need two rounds of tariff hikes in the next 30 months, according to the brokerage.

Background

Birla mentioned that fiscal year 2027 would be a key year for execution. He stressed the need for tariff adjustments to support the company's financial health. He said the foundations for Vodafone Idea's turnaround have been laid, with progress made in tackling legacy issues and expanding network infrastructure.
